All holiday work is due on Tuesday 5 May 2026 (first day of second term). Learners who submit late will not receive marks.
Mathematics Assignment
Section A — Quadratic Equations (20 marks)
- Solve the following by factorisation:
(a) ( x^2 - 9x + 20 = 0 )
(b) ( 2x^2 + 7x - 4 = 0 ) - Use the quadratic formula to solve ( 3x^2 - 2x - 1 = 0 ), giving your answers correct to 2 decimal places.
- A farmer encloses a rectangular field using 60 m of fencing. One side is a straight river (no fence needed). If the width is ( x ) metres, show that the area is ( A = x(60 - 2x) ). Find the value of ( x ) that maximises the area.
Section B — Indices and Surds (10 marks)
- Simplify: ( dfrac{2^5 imes 2^{-3}}{2^4} )
- Rationalise: ( dfrac{6}{sqrt{3}} )
- Show that ( sqrt{50} - sqrt{18} = 2sqrt{2} )
Science Assignment
Physics — Motion and Forces
- A car accelerates from rest to 30 m/s in 10 seconds. Calculate its acceleration.
- State Newton’s three laws of motion and give one everyday example for each.
- Draw a velocity-time graph for an object that:
- Accelerates uniformly from 0 to 20 m/s in 4 s
- Travels at constant velocity for 6 s
- Decelerates to rest in 5 s
Chemistry — Atomic Structure
- Draw the atomic structure of: (a) Carbon-12 ((,_6^{12} ext{C})) (b) Chlorine-35 ((,_{17}^{35} ext{Cl}))
- Define the following terms: isotope, nucleon number, proton number, relative atomic mass.
- Calculate the relative atomic mass of chlorine given that it consists of 75% (^{35} ext{Cl}) and 25% (^{37} ext{Cl}).
English Language Assignment
Composition (30 marks)
Write a composition of 300–400 words on ONE of the following topics:
- Describe a time when you overcame a difficult challenge at school.
- "Technology has done more harm than good to young people in Zimbabwe." Write a discursive essay arguing FOR or AGAINST this statement.
- Write a letter to your local school authority suggesting ways to improve science laboratories in rural schools.
